Hello, everyone. Welcome to another edition of Author's Corner. For those of you in the tri-state area (Pa/Jersey/Del), you might have already seen the Fractured Time commercial, which is running on Fox TV until the end of Christmas week. I've been working with my publisher to coordinate some trips for next year. I'm scheduled to visit Raleigh, Fayetteville and Greenville in North Carolina probably from February 20-23. In addition, I'll be in Virginia from March 18-23 primarily to attend the Virginia Book Festival. I will be stopping in Glen Allen and Lynchburg also for signings. More stops will be added in the next few weeks so keep watching to see if I'm going to be in your area. I'm also looking at a west coast trip beginning July 31 until August 7 or 8. This one's still a long shot but I'm targeting Los Angeles and Phoenix. As it gets closer, I'll give you more details. August 28, I'll be in Atlanta for about four days to attend the Dragon*Con Festival. There will be some signings scheduled around this trip as well. Each year, I'll try to target different areas so I can meet readers from all over.
For everyone who has purchased a copy of Fractured Time, thank you for your support. It's very difficult to get reviews from newspapers and magazines because of the volume of literature that is produced today. But I think potential readers place more value on the opinions of readers versus the media. If you've read Fractured Time, I'd love to have your "review". Send it through the site today.
The release date for Twisted Fate is fast approaching. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised when you read it. I think it's going to be different from anything you've read. Things are moving along well and we're still looking at late February or early March for its release. I'm really excited about this book because of how the plot transitions from Fractured Time to Twisted Fate.
Soon, you'll begin to see some changes in the site as Twisted Fate is incorporated into the site. This may take a few months to complete but my friends at Otherground are very good with website designs and maintenance so it may be a quicker transition.
On the movie front, things are quiet. I haven't heard back yet from RGH/Lions Share Pictures. Three others are also considering Fractured Time but these things can take a while. I consider myself fortunate to have gotten this far on my own without an agent. Speaking of which, I'm searching for an agent to represent me outside of the U.S. I've contacted a few but so far, no one is able to take on a new client. I'm looking to promote the rights to the book overseas, while protecting the film rights. I'd like to see Fractured Time promoted overseas and I'm not knowledgeable of the overseas markets, so I think having a professional will help. I'm also looking at agents who specifically market published books to the film industry. I'm leaving a lot of options open to see what is available to me.
This month's writer's tip involves protecting your work. When you first generate a manuscript, it's tough to market it without sending it in some form to someone. The Writers' Guild has a very good program to help you do this. You can send them your finished work electronically or in a sealed envelope, which is specially marked. For a reasonable fee, they will store it as a protected and dated document. If you believe your idea or work is pirated, you have dated proof of your work's existence. For more details on this, visit the writers' guild's website (www.wgae.org). This is a great way to protect your work until it's copyrighted.
Copyrights are the next step in literary protection. In addition, it's good to be aware of the different types of copyrights. For instance, a copyright on your hardback book is totally different than your paperback copyright. In addition, if you sell your rights, make sure you know what you are selling and what you still own. Another instance is where you would sell your rights to a publisher. Unless specified, you've sold all ownership to the book and anything that can be made from it, like a movie, or theatre play. If you sell your rights, be careful to specify what it does and doesn't cover.
Thanks for joining me and have a safe, happy holiday season. Join me in February for another edition of Author's Corner.
